Westwood Hills Renovation
The Westwood Hills Renovation reorganized a mid-century home around continuous sightlines from front to back. Forward Design + Architecture opened up the ground floor and added a two-story atrium at the back that pulls light deep into the home — creating a rhythm of compression and expansion as you move through the space. The home had been close to historic designation, derailed only by non-historic additions a prior owner had made, and the original architecture was treated with that level of respect throughout the build.
The plan was reset around how a homeowner with a serious eye for art and furniture actually lives well in a mid-century home: a combined kitchen-dining-living core for entertaining, a larger primary suite, and proper wall space to display his collection. The teak cabinetry he was adamant about was fabricated in the Hurst shop. Outside, corten steel planters, steps, & retaining elements tie the front landscaping back into the architecture. The result is a home that speaks to its history and to the lifestyle of its new owner.
